Music
The Music Department aims to develop
the
aesthetic sensitivity of all learners
regardless of their levels of musical
talent. Class music exposes learners to
music from different cultures spanning
many centuries. Singing, the playing of
Orff instruments, as well as creative
activities, form part of the curriculum.
Our choirs, orchestra, wind band, recorder
ensemble, African music and Orff groups
offer further opportunities for musical
enrichment. A basic musical knowledge
is acquired through class recorder lessons
in Grades 2 and 3. Theory classes at various
levels are offered in preparation for
music as a subject at High School.
Learners with a special interest in music
can
enrol for lessons in piano, violin. cello,
recorder, guitar, flute, clarinet and
various brass instruments. Developing
musicians are often entered into external
examinations, with excellent results.
Our girls are well represented in local
Eisteddfods and have received many awards
over the years.
Every music pupil is afforded the opportunity
to perform at different events and concerts
held throughout the year. Our music learners
are encouraged to be involved in outreach
projects under the auspices of the music
department.
Art
Paintings, drawings, paper-machè fish,
mobiles,
paper sculptures and other art works adorn
the classrooms and passages of our school.
These are the products of art lessons,
enjoyed by all girls as part of their
curriculum. Since the installation of
a kiln, girls have produced beautiful
hand-built pottery. Functional and decorative
pieces are glazed, painted or left natural.
New media and techniques are constantly
explored to stretch the imagination and
develop creative skills. When needed,
the skills learned in art classes are
used for the creation of props for concerts
and productions. Craft Club and Art club
are offered as extra-mural activities
for those girls who wish to develop their
artistic skills further.
Speech
and Drama
Speech and Drama are regarded as vital
elements in the
curriculum from Grades 3 to 7. Lessons
include learning to project one's voice
and articulate clearly, as well as using
inflection and expression to bring colour
to the spoken word. The girls gain confidence
by working in groups, and learn to deal
with situations through drama. A dramatic
highlight is the production which takes
place every three years. Every girl is
encouraged to be part of these productions.
Extra-mural drama lessons provide the
learner with the opportunity to develop
her skills further.
